Isabeau

 (pictures to follow soon)

A small hiccup occurs as we leave the Keys, instead of our usual 20 min. nap we end up waking up after more than 5 hours of sleep. Maybe it was the alcohol that messed up our sleep pattern (alcohol wreaks havoc on sleep cycles) but neither of us heard the alarm. This throws our entire trip off target and has the unfortunate downside of having us drive during the day through some really uninteresting places, only to go through some of the places we want to see at night, like Jekyll Island and Savannah.

So I try to take in some local American flavour as we go through some pretty banal roads and I make those observations:

  1. the roads are awesomely smooth thanks to the warm climate (frost shows no kindness to the state of the roads back home)

  2. A majority of businesses seem to concentrate on cars (car washes, car rental, used car dealers, new car dealers), weight loss and fatty food. There is an ironic remark to be made from the last two but it feels so cliché I'd rather shy away from making it.

  3. Words get shortened a lot (like through = thru and parkway = pkwy)

  4. You can go through interesting flora changes in a day if you drive fast enough.

Unfortunately, no matter how quick we drive we do not make it to Jekyll Island before the sunrise, but we decide to go despite the fact that everyone and everything will be asleep. Except the person taking care of the admission of course, but frankly, I should not waste your time writing about this, as there is very little to say, except that we saw some deers and they were tiny and it was very cute. yay.

We make it to Savannah before sunrise but decide to wait until it's day despite our being short on time, as this is a particularly charming town, that you may remember from the movie Forest Gump (it's the city where he was waiting for the bus) or from Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil. It has been called the most beautiful city in North America and it's easy to see why: as it is a National Historic Landmark, everything has been preserved and gives you an inkling as to what it may have looked like a few centuries ago.

An upside is the fact that it hasn't been invaded by tourists traps, so no annoying factor, just kilometers of cool architecture and luscious vegetation!

We can't really spend much time there so I do not have any witty remarks to make (and it's pretty much a matter of opinion as to whether or not I usually have any :P) so you go there and let me know what I should have written.

Now we are headed for Ocracoke island, where we will take a series of ferries (which I can't wait for!) in order to get on the other side to Atlantic City!

Savannah is near Hilton Head Island, where I used to go on vacation with my parents and I ask Seb if we can make the detour so I can show him around a little.

It's a much longer drive than I remember and to my disappointment, most interesting places to see cannot be accessed without a guest or resident pass (I also didn't remember this more important part), which we obviously do not have.

All that time wasted! Fortunately my man's a patient one and he suggests we stop in a local restaurant to make up for the detour.

We're still fairly south, but the tea isn't sweet here. However the chicken wings are spicy and that's what matters!

After our meal, we are back on our way, although this time we're a bit worried as upon consulting our maps, we realize that we are further away than we thought...

Will Isabeau and Sébastien make it in time for the last ferry? < tense music > Stay tuned to discover what happens to our protagonists in the next episode of "Poor and easily amused, the lifestyle of two fetish morons!"
