Oh this is going exactly where you might have figured from the title. Even though you could just close the page right now, PLEASE read a little more.
It’s very easy to avoid thinking about the environment because we don't have to deal with the consequences right away, but this shouldn't make a difference. As the Indians say: “We do not inherit earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children”.
The world does not change overnight. It gets better because people of good will do a little each day to make it better. Just one little effort that might take 20 seconds means the world becomes better. No point in saying: “bah, no one else does it, so my doing it won’t change anything” because it’s NOT TRUE and it's because everyone thinks that way that we still live in a world where hunger and war still rage.
If you do a little, you might inspire someone else to do the same and so on. It’s a good pollution effect :) And trust me, it will make you a happier person. I might sound like someone trying to lure you into a sect, but doing a little more everyday is something I firmly beleive in and it has made me happier because doing the best you can everyday is one of the greatest satisfaction you could ever get out of life (that and a night with Belladona I guess ).
I’m going to start with 6 easy tricks for the environment. - #1 on the top of my chart in flaming red letters: DON'T LET YOUR CAR RUN WHEN IT ISN'T MOVING. That's one of the most selfish thing you can do. It may be a bit too hot or cold out but mild discomfort is nothing in comparison to the real discomfort that will be experienced if we keep on the road we are on
- Bring a thermos coffee cup with you when you buy coffee from the coffee shop. It will prevent the use of non re-usable, non-recyclable foam cups and it will keep your coffee warm longer
- Use the public transport services as often as possible. Or try to co-drive rather then have people drive multiple cars to the same place if you don’t like the public transport services. OR at least buy a fuel-efficient vehicle. Gas has horrible consequences on a lot of things environment and human related, so it’s best to limit it
- Use yogurt containers instead of buying Tupperware ones. Recycling is better then throwing away (note that not always), but re-using is much better. There are only so many times a material can be recycled before it becomes useless and the process can also pollute.
- Eat less meat. Raising cattle pollutes a lot (not to mention the atrocious conditions the cattle is raised in) so try to restrict your intake of meat. I adore meat and feel that my body needs it so I was never able to become a complete vegetarian but I still make an effort and eat very little of it
- Verify that the container of the product you are about to purchase is recyclable. Some products have containers made of plastic that are recyclable. Buy that one over the next one on the shelf that isn’t
- Avoid overpackaged products, like gum individually wrapped, by a box instead
In general, just pay attention to the things around you. A little gesture like buying a good product over an equally good one that is bad for the environment pushes the companies to re-evaluate the need of their customers. If no one buys out of protest it means they have to change.
That’s our power and we have to use it.
