# Make sure you have the keys at hand if you use handcuffs or locks. It might sound extremely obvious and dumb, but I’m not dumb (well or at least I’ve deluded myself for the past 27 years into thinking I was not) and it happened to me once to use the handcuffs without thinking about the key and not finding it after. Talk about boring after sex. Kirsten gave me a trick for that: store any locking devices with the keys in them, that way the key will always be handy, and you won't accidentally use a lock that you've misplaced the key to... # Thinner rope is best avoided as it might cut off circulation. # Try to find the right balance between well tied and comfortable. Unless the point is for it to hurt # If you are going to use ropes, preferably use ones made with natural fibers (or Kevlar), nylon ones are harsher on the skin and might actually cut # Ropes should be a minimum of 1/4 inch. 1/4" works well for most non-suspension bondage, unless you are only planning on wrapping the rope around a limb once (in which case, you should really use something like 1/2"). Using larger ropes (1/2" +), however, will often make "elegant" bondage difficult - it doesn't wrap as well, or tie off easily. # Drag ropes through your fingers before using them on someone - this will let you make sure you don't have any frays/snags in the middle of the rope (which might break or snap during playtime), and will ensure there are no splinters or sharp bits caught in the rope from the last time you played (it can be an unpleasant surprise for your partner, let me tell you). # If you are planning on using leather straps and buckles and such, try to find ones that are supple - hard leather (usually untreated) is abrasive on the skin and will get uncomfortable quickly. # Stay away from silk scarves, unless you're willing to cut them (and keep scissors handy). People struggle (hopefully) and sweat (ok - maybe not *you*, but everyone else), and silk can be a bitch to get untied when it has a) tightened from excessive struggling or b) gotten wet.
